First Observation of Magnetic Flux Rope Inside Electron Diffusion Region

چکیده
Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) play a crucial role during magnetic reconnection. They are believed to be primarily generated by tearing mode instabilities in the electron diffusion region (EDR). However, they have never been observed inside EDR. Here, we present first observation of an MFR The bifurcated nonforce-free MFR, with width ∼27.5 de L direction and ∼4.8 N direction, was moving away from X-line. Inside strong energy dissipation detected. can modulate electric field We reconstructed topology electron-scale MFR. Our study promotes understanding MRFs’ initial state its processes

متن کاملFirst resolved observations of the demagnetized electron-diffusion region of an astrophysical magnetic-reconnection site.
Spatially resolved, diagnostic signatures across the X-line and electron-diffusion region (EDR) by the Polar spacecraft are reported at Earth's magnetopause. The X-line traversal has a local electron's skin depth scale. First, resolved EDR profiles are presented with peak electron thermal Mach numbers >1.5, anisotropy >7, calibrated electron agyrotropy >1, and misordered expansion parameters in...
متن کاملRegimes of the electron diffusion region in magnetic reconnection.
The electron diffusion region during magnetic reconnection lies in different regimes depending on the pressure anisotropy, which is regulated by the properties of thermal electron orbits. In kinetic simulations at the weakest guide fields, pitch angle mixing in velocity space causes the outflow electron pressure to become nearly isotropic. Above a threshold guide field that depends on a range o...
متن کاملPulsating Magnetic Reconnection Driven by Three-Dimensional Flux-Rope Interactions.
The dynamics of magnetic reconnection is investigated in a laboratory experiment consisting of two magnetic flux ropes, with currents slightly above the threshold for the kink instability. The evolution features periodic bursts of magnetic reconnection. To diagnose this complex evolution, volumetric three-dimensional data were acquired for both the magnetic and electric fields, allowing key fie...
متن کاملReconnecting flux-rope dynamo.
We develop a model of the fluctuation dynamo in which the magnetic field is confined to thin flux ropes advected by a multiscale model of turbulence. Magnetic dissipation occurs only via reconnection of the flux ropes. This model can be viewed as an implementation of the asymptotic limit R_{m}-->infinity for a continuous magnetic field, where magnetic dissipation is strongly localized to small ...
